The MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism is used for faster and quieter autofocusing for still images and movies. By reducing the weight of the focus lens group, AF time is reduced by 20-30%.
The faster AF speed ensures that you will never miss a shutter opportunity, even in the macro range. The inner focus lens does not change its length, so the lens does not extend and hit the subject.
